This is where the Fat Hippo restaurant journey started back in 2010. Welcome to our OG restaurant.
Our original Fat Hippo restaurant is based on St. George’s Terrace, located centrally in Jesmond, a vibrant suburb just outside of Newcastle city centre. Popular with students and families alike, Fat Hippo Jesmond is close to independent shops, cafes and the popular Osborne Road.
The nearest metro station to Fat Hippo Jesmond is West Jesmond which is only a four minutes’ walk to the restaurant.
Parking is available for non-permit holders on St. George’s Terrace until 5pm and after 5pm parking becomes available on Thornleigh Road.
We do accept walk ins at Fat Hippo Jesmond but we recommend booking a table if you’d like to join us at specific time to avoid any disappointment, especially when the restaurant is busy.
Yes, Fat Hippo Jesmond is a child friendly restaurant! It’s the ideal pit stop after a busy day at school, a swim at Jesmond Pool or a fun trip to Jesmond Dene. We have a varied kids menu (for the little Herd under 12), including vegan options, and we can cater for dietary requirements, including gluten-free and/or dairy-free. We also have high chairs, spacious booths and unisex baby changing facilities available for your little Herd!

Well behaved dogs are welcome in Fat Hippo Jesmond’s outdoor dining area. The restaurant also has selected tables that are dog friendly (with managerial discretion). Please contact Fat Hippo Jesmond directly to ensure an appropriate table is available at your selected time.
Fat Hippo Jesmond does have free WiFi - just ask a member of staff for the password!
At Fat Hippo Jesmond, the chicken we use is certified halal but the beef is not. If you require any further information about our ingredients or cooking processes, please email our Executive Chef, Dickie on dickie@fathippo.co.uk.
We sure do! Fat Hippo Jesmond has a covered and heated outdoor seating area, outside the restaurant on St. George’s Terrace – the perfect little sun trap in the summer months.
Fat Hippo Jesmond has one small step up into our restaurant which our staff will be more than happy to help with, then all facilities are on one level. However, there is not a disabled toilet.
We currently work with StudentBean and offer a 20% discount for students, Monday - Thursday. You will need to download and access the discount code via the studentBean app. We also have our Fast Hippo lunch deal available. Have a read of the further details of these offers.
