5 ways to enjoy free family fun in Newcastle this summer

5 ways to enjoy family fun for free!

Summer holidays. The kids are off school and BBQ season is officially upon us. It's all fun and games in the sunshine, that is until the weather refuses to play fair and you run out of ideas of how to keep the kids occupied. We know it can be hard (and expensive) trying to keep your family entertained. So we asked parent blogger, Sam Rickleton of North East Family Fun to share her top 5 ways to enjoy family fun in Newcastle this summer without having to spend a penny...

There’s no denying that summer can be expensive and I bet most parents have already heard the dreaded ‘I’m bored’ on more than one occasion. I have made it my mission this year to find places in the North East that will entertain my children but without the need for a second mortgage and have put together a list of our favourites. These places have been tried and tested by us, provide guaranteed fun and are completely free!

1 - Screen on the Green

Screen on the Green is your FREE ticket to fun, family movies this summer. Organised by Newcastle NE1, you just need to grab one of the deckchairs stationed outside old Eldon Square, sit back, relax and watch the action. The Fat Hippo Underground is a hop, skip and a jump away from the screen and we would recommend grabbing a burger to take with you before the movie starts. Full listings can be found here but our recommended movies are The Jungle Book (22nd August), The Labyrinth (29th August) and The Goonies (Sunday 4th August).

2 - The Playground Project

The Playground Project at Baltic on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside is a new installation that has been designed with children in mind. The project brings back playgrounds from years gone by and features quirky slides, Tarzan swings, sand pits and more. Simply whizz up to level 4 in the super fast lifts and let your kids explore and enjoy playgrounds as they should be. The exhibition is free and continues until October 30th 2016.

3 - Quayside Seaside

Newcastle City Centre is home to it’s very own pop up beach. You’ll find the beach in a prime position on the Quayside overlooking the River Tyne until October. Families can relax on the bright deckchairs, bury their toes in the sand, take in the atmosphere and watch their children build sandcastles with the buckets and spades provided.

4 - Ouseburn Farm

You’ll find this FREE Community Farm along the banks of the Ouseburn next to Seven Stories in Newcastle. The farm is small but perfectly formed and ideal for toddlers and small children who will love saying hello to the resident sheep, pigs, goats and chickens alongside the slightly more unusual Chinchillas, Tortoises and even a resident turkey. There’s a lovely selection of plants and home-grown produce for sale too.

5 - Newcastle Library

The Newcastle City Library is a fantastic place to spend a few hours and lose yourself (or your children) in a good book. Not only is their collection extensive, but they also run a fantastic events programme which includes Pokemon parties, a big summer reading challenge & live performances.
